As you read this, several dozens of long, cardboard boxes, imprinted with the Titleist Script, sit in the back of a delivery truck en route to Arnonimink Golf Club just outside Philadelphia, host of next week's AT&T National PGA Tour event. The Titleist AP1 712 irons were all shipped from the same place, the Titleist Tour Deparment in Carlsbad, Calif. On Monday morning, our Titleist Tour Reps at Aronimink will begin opening those boxes, each one marked with the name of a player in this week's AT&T field. Inside the boxes: Prototype Titleist AP1 712 irons, AP2, CB and MB irons (712 Series) , which are being introduced on the PGA Tour this week for testing and seeding as part of our performance validation process.

"712" is the series designation. Titleist has long used 700 numbers for irons, just as we just 900 numbers for metals. Accordingly, the "7" stands for irons, while the "12" stands for the new model year, 2012. Acushnet says the feedback it receives during this validation process influences the design and specifications of the Titleist products available in golf shops around the world. No word yet on when the Titleist AP1 712 irons will be available at retail.

Newtown Square, Pa. – You'll have to wait about four months to try Titleist's new 712 Series irons, but pros at the AT&T National are getting their first chance to hit the new
Titleist AP1 712 irons, AP2, CB and MB irons this week. While the heads of the new Titleist AP1 712 irons are the same size as their predecessors, their most significant new feature is a progressive blade length.

"The long irons are about the same size," said Chris McGinley, Titleist's vice president of golf club marketing. "But as you go through the Titleist AP1 712 irons, we brought the blade size down. That lets us make the long irons more forgiving and the short irons more traditional."

Titleist has stuck to the same four configurations of irons as the previous 710-generation with the MB, CB and AP2 irons all being forged while the

Titleist AP1 712 irons remain cast. There are some obvious cosmetic changes but it remains to be seen what the new technology will be in the Titleist AP1 712 Irons. I am sure we will find out pretty soon, but for now just admire the images and check out what some of the Titleist staff professionals had to say when they hit their first shots with them this week.

Detailed Specification

Building upon the high technology design and resounding success of the original AP irons, Titleist introduces the new high performance AP1 irons for avid golfers. The Titleist AP1 are multi-material, dual cavity irons that take the design mission of "Advanced Performance You Can Feel" to new heights. The concept for the original Advanced Performance irons arose as a result of research that indicated serious golfers want performance with great feel, not performance at the expense of feel. The Titleist R&D team’s advanced research group has been conducting extensive sound and vibration analysis aimed at reducing the harsh lower frequency vibration that causes poor feel in irons. This research led to combining several technologies and materials in the back cavity of the new AP irons resulting in a new Tuned Feel System to take feel to a new level. The new Tuned Feel System is a co-molded medallion of soft elastomer and aluminum plate. This insert has been specifically designed to improve the sound and feel of each new iron. For the thinner face, larger cavity AP1 a hotter, more lively feel has been enhanced.
